Overview
Building on our acclaimed workshops featuring Australian Ravens, Barn Owls, and Indian Mynas, Preserving for the Future is proud to present a new three‑day full‑mount avian taxidermy workshop focused on parrot species.
Parrots offer expressive posture, robust musculature, and distinctive plumage, making them ideal specimens for learning lifelike standing mounts. In this workshop, all participants will complete a standing full mount allowing you to focus on balance, leg wiring, and natural upright positioning.
Whether you’re a seasoned practitioner or a curious beginner, this workshop will guide you through the complete process of transforming a parrot specimen into a scientifically accurate and visually compelling display piece.
What You Will Learn
Under the expert guidance of Teori Shannon, specialist in avian preservation, participants will gain hands‑on experience with industry‑standard techniques:
Skinning & Defleshing — Remove tendons, tissue, and musculature while preserving the integrity of the skin and feather tracts.
Skin Preservation — Treat and stabilise the skin and delicate plumage to maintain natural texture and long‑term durability.
Binding & Form‑Making — Construct a custom anatomical form tailored to parrot proportions.
Standing Positioning — Wire legs, shape feet, and achieve a balanced, lifelike upright stance without the use of branches or pedestals.
This workshop emphasises precision, problem‑solving, and creative decision‑making—skills essential for producing museum‑quality avian mounts.
Workshop Details
This intensive three‑day course is designed for both experienced taxidermists seeking to refine their technique and beginners ready to explore the craft in depth. Working with ethically sourced materials, you will complete a full standing mount from start to finish, gaining confidence in each stage of the process.
What to Bring
Pencil/pen and a notepad for sketches and annotations
Optional: your own ethically sourced small avian specimen (Please notify us one month in advance if you intend to bring your own specimen.)
Materials & Chemicals
All materials are ethically sourced wherever possible. The workshop will utilise essential preservation chemicals—including borax, acetone, and formalin—ensuring both high‑quality results and strict adherence to safety standards.
