Overview
Building on our acclaimed workshops featuring Australian Ravens, Barn Owls, and Indian Mynas, Preserving for the Future is proud to present a new three-day full-mount avian taxidermy workshop focused on Australian parrots, with the Western Corella serving as the primary workshop specimen.
Additional species may be incorporated depending on availability.
Parrots offer expressive posture, robust anatomy, and distinctive plumage, making them ideal specimens for learning the art & science of taxidermy.
Throughout the workshop, participants will complete a full standing mount, focusing on balance, leg wiring, foot positioning, feather arrangement, and the subtle details that bring a specimen to life.
Whether you're a seasoned practitioner looking to refine your skills or a curious beginner eager to learn, this workshop will guide you through the complete process of transforming a parrot specimen into a scientifically accurate and visually compelling display piece.
What You Will Learn
Under the expert guidance of Teori Shannon, a specialist in avian preservation, participants will gain hands-on experience with industry-standard techniques, including:
Skinning & Defleshing
Remove tissue, fat, and connective material while preserving the integrity of the skin and feather tracts.
Skin Preservation
Treat and stabilise delicate skin and plumage to maintain natural texture, durability, and long-term stability.
Binding & Form-Making
Construct a custom anatomical form tailored specifically to your specimen.
Positioning & Finishing
Learn leg wiring, foot positioning, feather arrangement, pinning techniques, and how to achieve a balanced, lifelike natural stance.
This workshop emphasises precision, problem-solving, and creative decision-making, all essential skills for producing museum-quality avian mounts.
Workshop Details
This intensive three-day course is designed for both experienced taxidermists seeking to refine their technique and beginners ready to explore the craft in depth.
Working with ethically sourced materials, you will complete a full standing mount from start to finish, gaining confidence in each stage of the process.
Participants will take their completed specimen home at the conclusion of the workshop.
What to Bring
A pen or pencil and a notebook for taking notes and recording techniques.
A camera or smartphone is recommended for photographing each stage of the process.
Optional: Your own ethically sourced small avian specimen.
(Please notify us at least one month in advance if you intend to bring your own specimen.)
Materials & Chemicals
All materials are ethically sourced wherever possible.
The workshop will utilise essential preservation chemicals, including borax, acetone, and formalin, ensuring both high-quality results and strict adherence to safety standards.
All required PPE will be provided.
